Embracings
We all need touch, being touched, being in contact. We all need to be reminded that we are not alone.
So this is a reminder that we are already in touch, always. There are embracings everywhere. Our only need is to become more and more aware of how everyone we encounter touches us, as we touch them.
It costs nothing to smile at strangers. The only risk is that they will touch our hearts when they smile back.
It costs nothing to say thank you at small encounters. When someone hands us hot coffee over a counter, or change in a shop. Every smile is a thank you for seeing me.
It may seem a small thing to say, “I like the colour of your dress.” Or, “I see you are in high spirits, and it gives me pleasure.” So why don’t we say such things more often?
Some small encounters may give us so much joy that we can feel the currents of it in our spines. Isn’t that physical touch? Isn’t that what we all crave? Why not give words to those feelings, as poets do?
It costs nothing to become more and more aware of how people touch us. It costs nothing to bear witness, in many different ways.
